Unaccompanied Children Under 16

Starting after Labor Day, when any public school in St. Charles County has a full or partial day of school, the following is required prior to 5 pm: children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult or the guardian of any child between 10 and 16 must fill out an online form allowing their child to attend the Library unaccompanied. Children under the age of 10 are required to be accompanied by an adult at all times.

The CEO of the Library has the authority to place limits on the number of unaccompanied children under 16 allowed in any single library at one time. In establishing any such limits, the CEO shall consider the staffing and space needs of each library.

  • The Library is establishing this new policy with the safety of patrons and staff in mind. Being able to contact parents of those under 16 will be helpful in case of injury, behavior issues, and more. Also, establishing a reasonable ratio of staff to Unaccompanied Children will ensure the safety of children and staff in a branch at a given time.

  •  This policy ensures a welcoming environment for all patrons and staff during the after-school hours, and that Library resources are available to all on an equitable basis.

  • These parameters do not apply during the Summer or during other extended school breaks like Spring Break, Fall Break, or Holiday Break.

For more information please view the Unaccompanied Children Under 16 Policy.

Parents can fill out the permission form here.
